Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Application Process and Fee Payments.

The registration process for all our events and programs is exclusively online and conducted only through our official website: afrileadnetwork.org. To complete your registration, please provide all required information, including your contact details, and thoughtfully answer all the questions on the form to increase your chances of selection, as you will be competing with other equally qualified candidates. If applying for a scholarship, submit a separate scholarship application. Agree to the terms and conditions, review our privacy and data collection policies, and proceed to pay the stipulated application fee to finalize your application.

Since all our events are international, participants are required to travel across borders, except for nationals of the host country. We highly recommend that all applicants hold a valid passport to facilitate travel, especially by air, if selected. However, our application system allows flexibility—you can apply by attaching your National ID in the passport section and obtaining your passport before the event’s travel date. Passports are readily available to nationals or qualifying individuals through the legal and regulatory frameworks of each country.

AfriLead EduTourism Network (ALEN) is a global organization with offices in Dar es Salaam (Tanzania), Kampala (Uganda), and Washington, D.C. (USA). As a non-partisan, non-political, and non-profit entity, ALEN relies on donations, event and campaign fees, and support from well-wishers to sustain its operations, provide scholarships, and promote global progress. The uniform basic registration fee of $22 helps ALEN cover the legal, social, and logistical costs of organizing and managing events.

Application fee payments can be made online using a credit/debit card, American Express, Discover, or Direct Bank Transfer. If you do not have a card, you may use one belonging to a friend, family member, or colleague to make your payment. Additionally, mobile money transactions are available for those who prefer this method. All transactions are handled by credible, secure, and internationally recognized payment service providers (PSPs).

If your card is declined, follow these steps before contacting us:
• Ensure your card is active and not blocked by your financial institution, particularly for international payments or transfers.
• Confirm that your balance is sufficient to cover the application fee.
• Contact your bank to activate international e-commerce transactions if not already enabled. If the problem persists, you can reach us at support@afrileadnetwork.org or info@afrileadnetwork.org, or via WhatsApp at +1 (202) 702-4211 for further assistance.

ALEN offers three categories of scholarships:
• Fully Funded Scholarships: Cover all costs for merit-based delegates.
• Partially Funded Seats: Cover partial expenses, with the rest to be borne by the delegate.
• Self-Funded Scholarships: Require the delegate to cover all costs.
Selection for these categories is carried out by experienced panellists affiliated with reputable international organizations, institutions, agencies, and universities to ensure transparency and fairness. Special consideration may be given to marginalized groups, underrepresented communities, women, and girls to promote equality and inclusivity.

Visa Processing and Travel Plan Assistance.

Many of our conferences and events are held in countries that offer visa waivers or are visa-free for certain nationalities, especially under tourism visa agreements. We recommend checking with your local immigration office, Ministry of Internal Affairs, or official government websites to determine if you qualify for a visa waiver.
Some countries offer electronic visa applications or visas on arrival at airports or other ports of entry. The specific type of visa you should apply for depends on the hosting country’s regulations. Generally, participants may apply for a visit visa, conference attendance visa, or business visa based on their individual circumstances.
In some cases, you may apply for a visa through a licensed travel agency, while other countries may require a direct application with the embassy or their official partners. If you need assistance or are unsure about the process, please contact us for further guidance. We advise all delegates to exercise due diligence to avoid scams or fraud.

ALEN provides a Visa Invitation Letter to confirmed delegates who have completed the application and selection process, including the full payment of application fees. This official letter is issued on ALEN’s letterhead, signed, and stamped by the Executive Director or an authorized representative. Delegates must request this letter through ALEN’s official email. The invitation letter, along with your other visa application documents, will support your visa application at the consulate or designated visa agency.

Visa fees, flight tickets, and other transportation costs are not included in ALEN’s general conference packages. Delegates are responsible for processing and paying for their visa applications and booking tickets independently or with assistance from ALEN.
For delegates awarded fully funded scholarships, travel costs (flights or public transportation) are fully reimbursed upon submission of credible, verifiable invoices and itinerary details. Partially or self-funded delegates must cover their own transportation and visa fees.

Yes, ALEN partners with travel agencies and companies to support delegates with travel planning, including booking airline or bus tickets and offering expert advice to ensure a smooth and safe journey. Support is provided upon request. For assistance, contact us at support@afrileadnetwork.org, info@afrileadnetwork.org, or via WhatsApp at +1 (202) 702-4211.

In the unlikely event of a visa rejection (which has not happened to any of our delegates so far), ALEN allows delegates to postpone their participation to the next available event without needing to reapply or pay additional fees. This option is subject to ALEN’s policies, terms, and conditions, which may change as determined by the Board of Directors. For more details, refer to our terms and policies page.

The registration fee is non-refundable. However, if your visa application is rejected, you may reschedule your participation to a future event under specific terms and conditions. For more information, please refer to ALEN’s terms and policies.

Scholarship FAQs

ALEN scholarships are designed to support not only the brightest young talent from diverse countries and sectors but also unique and promising leaders poised to make a global impact. These individuals may excel through innovation, entrepreneurship, start-ups, or sustainable ideas and solutions. For every event or activity ALEN organizes, several scholarship slots are reserved for candidates who align with our vision and meet our eligibility criteria.

a) Fully Funded Scholarships: Fully funded scholarships cover all expenses for the selected delegate. This includes airfare (round-trip tickets based on the delegate’s nationality), conference accommodations, meals, event merchandise, and access to all event privileges. For detailed information, please refer to our scholarship section and general FAQ.

b) Partially Funded Scholarships: Partially funded scholarships offer the same benefits as fully funded scholarships except for airfare, which the delegate is responsible for covering.

c) Self-Funded Delegates: Self-funded delegates have two options:
–  Purchase ALEN’s private package, which provides access to the same event privileges as other scholarship categories, excluding airfare.
–  Independently cover and manage all expenses, including accommodations, meals, event merchandise, gala or party costs, and other personal expenses, without ALEN’s involvement.

Eligibility criteria vary across scholarship categories. We believe most of our delegates already meet the basic requirements, but applicants are strongly encouraged to review the Application Tips section. Your application should clearly and uniquely convey your qualifications, motivations, and potential to stand out in a competitive pool of candidates.

Yes, you may apply for multiple scholarships, but you can only be awarded one scholarship at a time.

Yes, ALEN Ambassadors can apply for scholarships. However, priority is given to first-time attendees. Scholarships are awarded based on adherence to application instructions, demonstrated motivation, potential impact, and alignment with future career goals. ALEN is committed to ensuring these opportunities are accessible to as many individuals as possible, regardless of financial constraints, location, or background.
Ambassadors are also encouraged to contact the organization directly through our official channels to explore other avenues of participation or support, including scholarships.

ALEN will notify all applicants of their application outcomes via official email, regardless of the result. Please note that we are unable to respond to individual inquiries about application statuses. For further information, feel free to contact us using the forms or contact details on our website.

Due to the high volume of applications, ALEN is unable to provide individualized feedback. We appreciate your understanding.

If you were not selected for a scholarship, don’t be discouraged! ALEN frequently offers new events and conferences with scholarship opportunities. Keep an eye on our scholarship page and consider refining your application by reaching out to former scholars, alumni, or affiliates for guidance.
If you remain unsuccessful in securing a scholarship, you can still attend as a self-funded delegate. Additionally, consider seeking external funding from well-wishers, sponsors, or organisations that support changemakers.

General Applications and Scholarship Tips for Delegates

Please complete all event and scholarship application sections in English. However, an exception applies to citizens of East African Community (EAC) member states, who may complete their application entirely in either English or Swahili. Despite this language option, the evaluation criteria, selection process, and scholarship awarding metrics remain consistent for all applicants, regardless of their region.

Carefully read through each subsection of the application form and gather all the materials or ideas that best represent your qualifications. Focus on submitting one strong, well-thought-out application rather than spreading yourself thin with multiple applications that may not align with your skills or experience.

Stand out by telling us what truly sets you apart from the rest of the candidate pool. Don’t just describe yourself as determined or dedicated—explain why you embody those traits and provide evidence. What makes your story or journey compelling? That’s what matters most.

Whether you’re a professional, student, graduate, or fresh graduate, we want to hear about your aspirations and achievements. If you’ve already made an impact, tell us about it—what is the mission of your start-up, business, or organization? How many people have you impacted, or hope to impact? If you’re still starting out, share your vision and career goals with honesty and authenticity.

Our events and conferences are transformative experiences, but what do you hope to gain from participating? Why do you want to join the world’s most impactful network of young leaders and changemakers? ALEN is always searching for motivated, unique talents who can actively contribute to our Ambassador community and Alumni network. Use this opportunity to showcase your passion and convince us why you’re the perfect fit.

Provide resources or links to illustrate your achievements and work, such as articles, videos, or other documentation. While showcasing your accomplishments is important, your personality and the way you present yourself also matter. We want to see your work in action, but more importantly, we want to understand who you are beyond your achievements.

Before submitting, double-check your application to ensure it’s clear, complete, and easy to understand. Does it communicate everything you want to convey? Consider asking a friend, family member, or colleague to review your application for mistakes and provide constructive feedback.

Internet issues can strike unexpectedly. To prevent losing your work, save a copy of your application on a separate document. Working on your responses offline also gives you the chance to refine them before completing the online submission.

Avoid rushing through the application process and missing key details. Mistakes in critical fields like your email address, phone number, or passport/ID number can jeopardize your chances. Take your time, remain calm, and ensure every field is accurately completed before submission.

If you’re hesitant about applying or doubting your qualifications, remember: a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. Applying is your first step toward earning a prestigious scholarship, becoming an ALEN Ambassador, or representing your country, organization, or business on a global stage.
If you apply but are unsuccessful, view it as a valuable learning experience to improve for future opportunities. ALEN offers numerous events, conferences, tours, and summits throughout the year, each with scholarship opportunities. Your journey doesn’t end with one application—it’s just the beginning.
